William Battle, well known Putnam County colored farmer died at his home southeast of Greencastle Saturday morning at the advanced age of 90 years or more. It is believed he is the sole survivor of the slave era in Putnam County.  Mr. Battle is survived by four children, a son, Walter of Terre Haute, three daughter, Mrs. Minnie Smith and Mrs. Jesse Green, Indianapolis and Mrs. Ida Russell at home.  A sister, Mrs. Harriet Dickson of Terre Haute also survives. The funeral will be held probably Monday. Friends may call at the Rector Funeral Home.
